Shop around, because some are completely free and others have an annual charge of about £12. Those that are issued by banks rather than by independent credit card providers are normally free.

It's a good idea to have one for emergencies, and also to help build up a good credit rating, so even if you can't find a free one it may still be worth paying the charge.
