Wheres the credit crunch in UK?

Here in Aberdeen many companies have been making redundancies, some small companies have closed down, lots of shops are closing down & there is a down turn in the cost of houses etc.
Also, I have been looking for a new permanent job since October & there just are no jobs to be had. Even one of the local recruitment agencies has paid off some of its consultants.
I am now temping & am earning £5k less than at this time last year. I have never smoked or drank so can’t give them up to save money. I drive but need the car to get to work so can’t give that up either.
Maybe I should move to where you are if the credit crunch has made such a minimal impact. Those who still have work are learning to do and mend…..not a bad thing once you get the grasp of it….having new this and that to keep up with joneses has it’s pitfalls…

my car is twelve years old, i do not intend changing it any time soon, money saved already…it’s that easy….It is not an unusual phenomena in economic downturns. Those who have jobs and incomes can live quite well. In the 1930s those who were not unemployed, contrary to the the images of dole queues and unemployed marches, had a fairly decent lifestyle.

Many of the middle and lower middle classes could, for example, afford
to employ a maid for a few days a week. Mass consumer spending also began to take off. While unemployment was in the millions and remained so until well into 1941 for those in steady jobs life could be quite good. Another factor was low inflation and low prices. Again those with jobs and incomes benefited.

Something similar is happening now although many feel that their jobs are insecure. While people may act as if there is no crisis it must be borne in mind that mass chronic unemployment and public spending cuts took a couple of years to work through the system after the financial crash of 1929.
